Drexel University Stratton Hall

Philadelphia, PA

Olaya Studio renovated 60,000 SF of Stratton Hall, a 1955 biology and chemistry building, into a 21st century facility for the Department of Psychology.  The renovations involved faculty offices, research rooms, classrooms, conference rooms, corridors, lounges and informal break-out areas.  We introduced natural light into the building’s core by placing lounges in spaces with large exterior windows and adding interior ones to all the new class and conference rooms.  On the second floor, we designed a lobby space at the intersection of the two main corridors, which functions as a lobby, where people orient themselves, meet and wait.  The composition of the now wider and taller corridors include visually interesting rhythms of niches and materials in what was once a banal and drab space.
