Principal

Richard Olaya is the Principal and founder of Olaya Studio. Rich has been in the architecture field for over 25 years and has been a registered architect in Pennsylvania since 2005.  His extensive experience of project types ranges from museums to university buildings and high rise multi-family buildings. Born in Bogota, Colombia, Rich’s  multi-cultural background provide clients with a unique global and cosmopolitan perspective.  As a Philadelphia resident for over 25 years, Rich also provides an intimate understanding of the region’s history and context.

As a way to keep the creative juices flowing within the office, Rich likes to schedule the occasional field trip with the whole office to visit an artist’s studio, take in a nearby lecture, or have an impromptu happy hour on the front porch of the house.   Rich, along with his teen age boys have been residents of University City for the last 15 years.  He’s an active member in his community volunteering and contributing his time towards various arts organizations in neighborhood. One of Rich’s interests out of the office includes training for and participating in Olympic distance triathlons.  A recent discovery of the sport has become a source of great joy, a few aches, and diverted what could have very well been a serious mid-life crisis.

Andres Stell, LEED®AP
Architectural Designer

Andres is a designer with over 15 years of extensive experience in the design and documentation of higher education, mixed use residential, science & technology, healthcare, religious, education and retail projects.  Andres' expertise in the use of 3-D visualization software such as Revit provides the firm with a tremendous asset towards serving our wide range of clients.

Andres is passionate about all aspects of sustainability. In a world with limited resources, he truly believes we need to think about the way we live and the process towards good design.  One example Andres lives in what he believes is that he has been commuting to work on his bike since 2007, logging on an average of 60 miles a week on his bike.  Aside from biking, Andres’ interests also include photography, gardening and woodworking. He sees photography as a way to capture the beauty and reality of life, in a way that is preserved and can be shared. He enjoys gardening, because he loves knowing that with a little effort, one can grow food from seed, and start to close the loop for the way we live. He tries to use as much as he can from the garden, and then the scraps and waste are composted and returned to the garden to provide nutrients for the next cycle. With woodworking he finds a joy in creating something with his own hands that his family and friends can use. His hobbies influence his career, as he strives to design places that help capture the beauty in life, and are closely tied to balances of nature that one experiences when one gardens.
